RK started as a small plumbing company founded by Ron Kinning in 1963 in Northeast Nebraska. From its humble roots, it grew into a regional plumbing, mechanical and HVAC company that was winning work throughout the Midwest and Texas.
In October of 1985, Ron and his son Rick Kinning became partners in a new company: RK Mechanical, Inc. In April 1986, they moved the company to Denver, CO. RK strengthened its family foundation further when Jon Kinning, Rick’s brother, rejoined in 1996 and became a partner in 2001.

Under the leadership of CEO Rick Kinning and COO Jon Kinning, RK has grown into an international company that serves the construction, manufacturing and service sectors. Although RK now has over 1,600 employees working in seven distinct business units, RK still prides itself on its family values and its community contributions through safe and quality work, workforce education, innovation and corporate social responsibility.
The Kinning family instilled the company with a strong sense of philanthropy, and over the years, RK supported many charitable causes. Rick Kinning decided to formalize RK’s charitable contributions by forming a foundation, and the RK Foundation was established shortly thereafter in 2011.
The RK Foundation is uniquely funded by the recycling of all scrap metal produced at RK’s two fabrication facilities and its project and service sites. So far, RK has recycled many tons of scrap metal that have supported the grants that the RK Foundation awards to many organizations.

The RK Foundation Board of Directors includes Jon and Aimee Kinning, Rick and Marcee Kinning, and Katie Bedard Dell. Since its inception, the RK Foundation has granted roughly $650,000 to Colorado organizations that contribute in the areas of: community development, education, health and human services.
RK is proud of its reputation for helping to construct many of the buildings that shape the Colorado landscape. RKF’s reputation is now beginning to show as an impact player to the charitable giving community as well. Today, RK and its employees recognize—and are deeply proud of—the RK Foundation’s positive impact on the local community that supports all of our families.
